680News – Weekend events in GTA and beyond: Jan. 9-11

Below are some events taking place in the GTA and beyond, Jan. 9-11, 2013:

For families: A musical based on the popular book about a girl who turns colour after eating too many pink cupcakes, appropriately named Pinkalicious!, has been extended at the Lower Ossington Theatre due to popular demand. 100A Ossington Ave. Sunday, 1 p.m. Until end of February. Tickets: $29.50 to $39.50.

For visitors: Tourists are known for snapping up trinkets, postcards and street art, but how about a boat? The Toronto International Boat Show starts this weekend. It features the world’s largest indoor lake, set up inside Ricoh Coliseum, where you can take canoes or kayaks for a “test drive” and check out pro wakeboarders. Direct Energy Centre, 100 Princes Blvd. Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Until Jan. 20 Tickets: $18 for adults. Kids 16 and under: free.

For singles: Christmas credit card bills, shorter days, cold weather — January can be a glum month. Check out famed graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister’s secrets to happiness at The Happy Show at the Design Exchange. The exhibit outlines the artists’ 10-year exploration of happiness. 234 Bay St. Until March 3, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets: $15.20.

For charity: The temperatures may be mild this weekend but it will still be cold for those who sleep on the streets. Toronto police are looking for volunteers to help them pack care packages for the homeless as part of Project Winter Survival. Police Chief Bill Blair and Cityline’s Tracy Moore will be there helping out. This kits containing clothes, sleeping bags and personal care items, will be handed out next week. Saturday, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. 890 Caledonia Rd., near Glencairn Avenue. Call (416) 560-6441 for more information.

For kicks: Planning a trip down the aisle? The 12th annual Wedding Co. Show takes over the Carlu this weekend. Caterers, photographers and designers will be showcasing every item you could want for the big day. Friday, 5 p.m.-9 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The Carlu, 444 Yonge St. (at College Street), 7th floor. Tickets: $25 online $30, at the door.
