The Good Neighbours’ Club Honours Women in Community Leadership – Respect
We frequently offer tours of our Club to individuals and groups, and each time we do we surprise our visitors by telling them that our all-male Club—known as “The Old Man’s Club” on the street—was started by a woman.
In 1933, May Birchard convinced the City of Toronto, the armed forces, and the city’s police to form a Club for older homeless and unemployed men. This was a real feat in the 1930s, when male leadership was a given in our society.
Today, women are more often than not in positions of leadership in community services. This year at our annual Day of the Homeless we celebrate Women in Community Leadership. Paul Croutch Awards, sponsored by TD, will be presented to Jody Steinhauer, CEO of The Bargains Group; Angie Hains, Executive Director of Ecuhome; Susan McIsaac, CEO of The United Way of Greater Toronto; and Camille Orridge, CEO of the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network.
Our Day of the Homeless will take place at The Good Neighbours’ Club at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. CityNews Anchor and Reporter Roger Petersen from Citytv will be our master of ceremonies.
